Knowledge Ally is a passion project of mine, born from my own experiences serving time in the Bureau of Prisons. While incarcerated, I was denied access to a graphing calculator—a basic tool for education. This experience opened my eyes to the alarming reality of how severely educational resources are restricted within the prison system.
The statistics are staggering: 30% of incarcerated individuals do not have a high school diploma or GED, and only 9% have a college degree. Meanwhile, access to higher education is virtually nonexistent, with only 6% of incarcerated individuals enrolled in college courses.
Education is one of the most effective ways to reduce recidivism—people who participate in educational programs while incarcerated are 43% less likely to return to prison. Yet, many prisons limit access to learning materials, outdated textbooks, and even simple tools like graphing calculators.
Rehabilitation must be a part of the system—education is key to providing people with opportunities for growth, development, and a future beyond incarceration. It can't be all punitive and no rehabilitation. If the government won't do it, I'll do it myself!
Knowledge Ally exists to break down these barriers, providing essential educational tools to those who need them most. I see no reason why an inmate should have hinderances to making the best of what will likely be the most disciplined and regimented time period of their lives.
Educational Tier (Free): Unlimited access to the graphing calculator. If approved for use of additional resources as educational queries, Inmates pursuing structured learning in any form can use this tier at no cost.
